As a Faculty Member

I am a Distinguished University Professor of University of Maryland, College Park, where I am Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and Christine Kim Eminent Professor of Information Technology.

I lead the Maryland Signals and Information Group (SIG) with research contributions that encompass broad aspects of signal processing and communications, with a recent focus on wireless AI for wireless sensing and indoor tracking, in which I have published over 10 books and 800 refereed papers. The citations to my works, according to Google Scholars, are over 38,000 with H=95.

Over the years, I have trained 68 Ph.D. and postdoctoral students, of which ten of them are now IEEE fellows, and most of whom are active members of major universities and industrial institutions worldwide. I have also inspired many to join IEEE as their professional Society and to grow in volunteer positions.

 

I am the recipient of two IEEE Technical Field Awards: the 2021 IEEE Fourier Award for Signal Processing with the citation “for outstanding leadership in and pioneering contributions to signal processing for wireless sensing and communications”, and the 2016 IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award "for exemplary teaching and curriculum development, inspirational mentoring of graduate students, and broad educational impact in signal processing and communications".

I also received IEEE Signal Processing Society 2009 Technical Achievement Award, 2014 Society Award (the highest award bestowed by SPS now called Norbert Wiener Society Award) for “influential technical contributions and profound leadership impact”, and over a dozen best paper/invention awards. Recognized as a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher, I am a Fellow of IEEE (2003), AAAS (2008), and U.S. National Academy of Inventors (2019).  

My research was featured as one of seven technologies that IEEE believes will have the world-changing implications on the way humans interact with machines, the world and each other, in honor of IEEE's 125th Anniversary.

I have also received various recognitions from University of Maryland, including the university-level Invention of the Year Award (for three times), Poole and Kent Senior Faculty Teaching Award, Outstanding Faculty Research Award, and Outstanding Faculty Service Award, all from A. James Clark School of Engineering. 

I received the B.S. degree from the National Taiwan University in 1983, and the Ph.D. degree from UCLA in 1990, both in electrical engineering.

Both a world-class researcher and an excellent educator who pioneered and cross-pollinated various fields, Liu built the University of Maryland’s signal processing program practically from scratch beginning in 1990 and has shaped it into one of the most well-respected graduate programs in the world. He also revamped the university’s master’s program in telecommunications, creating a unique identity resulting in a scholarly and financially successful program." 

As an Entrepreneur

I am the founder and President of Origin Wireless, Inc., that pioneers wireless AI for wireless sensing and indoor positioning with over 100 patents filed or granted. The invention of my team, the Wireless AI, won the prestigious 2017 CEATEC Grand Prix award. The product is now available as Belkin’s Linksys Aware over 150 countries worldwide, which won the CES 2020 Innovation Award.

In my Spare Time...

In my leisure time, I love gardening. One of my hobbies is to collect Japanese maples. At one point, I had more than 40 different kinds of cultivars, some of which can be seen from my photos at http://www.cspl.umd.edu/kjrliu/Maples/. I used to grow many trees from finding seedlings around my garden and backyard and then gave away when getting bigger in hope of a greener and better world. I also grow 20+ varieties of vegetables in the summer and fall and share with friends the joy of produces.

As a cooking enthusiast, I have over 60 recipe cookbooks from all different regions and a collection of spices from all over the world. I love cooking food from different cultures, besides Chinese and American, including from Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thai, India, Iran, Lebanon, Israel, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Greece, Italy, France, Germany, British, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Peru, etc. I also brew various kinds of beer from different regions.
